Zacapa rum is named after the city of Zacapa in Guatemala, and was created to commemorate the centennial celebration of its founding. Originating from the Aztec Nahuatl language, the name Zacapa means "over the river of grass".
Zacapa rums are made in Guatemala, using virgin sugar cane instead of molasses (which is more commonly used). The use of the first pressing of sugar cane makes the rum sweeter and smoother, and it is at this early stage of the process that the distinctive characteristics of Zacapa Rum begin to develop.
