La Cueva del Contador is a wonderful red wine produced in the D.O. La Rioja by Bodega Contador.
Bodega Contador is the project of the brilliant winemaker and viticulturist Benjamín Romeo. Benjamín started Bodega Contador in 1995, making the first vintages of Cueva del Contador and Contador in a small century-old cave under the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
In the past, these caves were used to store and preserve wine. The name "Contador" comes from the person who sat at the entrance of the cave and literally counted the wine that came in.
La Cueva del Contador is a single varietal Tempranillo, grapes from 7 small plots owned by the winery located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonriera and Ábalos.
Different clay-limestone soils together with different orientations, altitudes and microclimates allow the production of a very complex wine.
Bodega Contador practices agriculture that follows the principles of biodynamic agriculture.
The soil is fertilized only with organic matter from sheep manure, and only in some years.
The only treatments carried out on the vines are non-residual treatments, which are considered essential to guarantee the health of the grapes.
