Contador has become one of the great cult wines in Spain. And even more so after achieving for two consecutive vintages one of the highest distinctions to which a wine can opt for: 100 Parker points, obtained in the 2004 and 2005 vintages.
Contador is made by the great Benjamín Romeo at Bodega Contador, a legendary winery in the D.O. La Rioja, and is a blend of 94% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 3% Mazuelo.
The grapes come from small plots owned by the winery, distributed in various towns in the Rioja Alavesa area: San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Briones, Ábalos and Labastida.
Diversity of soils, microclimates, orientations and altitudes make this a great wine. Very complex and rich in nuances, Contador is a pure and sincere expression of the land.
According to Benjamín Romeo "A great wine is born in the vineyard". It is impossible to make a wine like this without careful agriculture.
In order to extract the highest possible quality, the vines are goblet pruned leaving only one bud per thumb. Less production, but of the highest quality.
