La Cueva del Contador is a wonderful red wine produced by Bodega Contador in the La Rioja D.O.
Bodega Contador is the project of the brilliant winemaker and viticulturist Benjamín Romeo. Benjamín started Bodega Contador in 1995, producing the first vintages of La Cueva del Contador and Contador in a small, centuries-old cave beneath the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
In the past, these caves were used to store and preserve wines. The name "Contador" comes from the person who sat at the entrance of the cave and literally counted the wine that came in.
La Cueva del Contador is a single-varietal Tempranillo grape from seven small plots owned by the winery, located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonriera and Ábalos.
