L'Ermita 2016 is considered the masterpiece of winemaker Álvaro Palacios. A red wine crafted under the D.O. Priorat with meticulously selected Garnacha Tinta grapes, complemented by a small proportion of Cariñena.
A spectacular and exclusive red wine (only 1,350 bottles of the 2016 vintage were produced) that year after year receives top ratings from international experts such as The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker with 97–100 points, and national ratings such as the Peñín Guide with 97 points. James Suckling has also awarded it 97 points.
ELABORATION: Álvaro Palacios' L'Ermita is made from grapes harvested from very old vines (averaging over 90 years) located in a tiny plot (Finca L’Ermita) spanning less than 2 hectares.
This estate, situated at an altitude of 450 meters, has nutrient-poor soils rich in slate and sandstone, which result in low yields from the vineyard’s plants.
Harvesting is done manually, with clusters picked at their optimal ripeness.
In the winery, the grapes undergo gentle destemming and crushing. The must then undergoes alcoholic fermentation for 45 days in wooden vats, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs.
Finally, L’Ermita undergoes malolactic fermentation followed by 16 months of aging in new French oak barrels.
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Dominant notes of ripe red and black fruits (blueberries, currants, and blackberries), complemented by subtle aromas evoking mineral undertones and sweet spices such as vanilla and cinnamon.
Palate: A well-structured red wine with a long finish. The flavor is characterized by fruit nuances combined with mineral hints and a slight touch of acidity.
AGING POTENTIAL: A red wine with excellent aging potential, perfect for consumption both now and within the next 20 years (provided it is stored under optimal conditions).
PAIRING: An excellent match for all kinds of meat dishes, such as roasts and game birds, grilled red meats, as well as stews, risottos, and hearty soups.
